Ludwig Vistalites?

I have a guitarist friend who is obsessed with these drums and has started "collecting" them piece by piece. From some searches on the net, I found that he is not the only one!

I have always wondered what's the big deal with these drums? Do they really sound good? Are they high quality? Fiberglass or acrylic? They look cheap to me.

Bonham used to play them and I'm sure that's how they got so popular.

Any fans of these drums? Any info?

for me, vistalites sound awesome about 20 feet out. they travel extreemly well. however, if you are going for anything but a big open live drum sound. "a la bohnam" it's hard to get.

you can muffle them and you will get a 60's to 70's sound be it ringo or steely dan, depending on muffleing taste, but that's about it.

keep in mind that's just my opinion though.
